The title of the book Rawsome Vegan Cookbook might leave you wondering...”is this a raw food book or a cookbook?” Well, it's both. Roughly the first half of the book is the raw section, and the second half is the cooked section. So whether it's summer or winter, whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or just eating a healthier range of foods, there's stacks of choices here to delight any palate. A different take on some classics like lasagne, macaroni cheese, channa masala and pizza, along with some variations on a selection of salads and soups.
Most of the ingredients in the recipes are readily available, although some of the less common mushrooms may be more tricky to find. The Rawsome Vegan Cookbook calls on you to make best use of farmers markets and local produce wherever possible, available, and affordable. It's worth noting here that there is no dessert/sweets section in this book, and there's no specific breakfast/lunch/dinner layout. In fact, the recipes seem to be designed for lunch and dinner meals (although no-one said you can't have falafel and lemon pepper spinach salad for brekky!)
The author, Emily, provides introductory notes and tips on ingredients, some prep work that's required for some of the dishes (like soaking nuts), and the kitchen equipment she uses – which is really just an oven, a mandolin slicer, and a blender.
Emily von Euw has previously written best selling books Rawsome Vegan Baking and 100 Best Juices, and writes her books in a conversational manner which makes it an easy read. At the back of the book is a list of recommended books and documentaries for anyone interested in finding out more about environmental and ethical implications of food production.
