Natural Moisturisers with SPF – A Brand Comparison

Posted on 07 December 2014 by Marie Hunter

Always on a quest to find the ultimate natural moisturiser with SPF, here we compare and review our five best natural skin care products for summer. Firstly, we must clarify what differentiates these products from other natural sunscreens and also from other moisturisers with sun protective factor – included in this comparison are moisturisers with sunscreen that are designed specifically for use on the face. While there are many natural sunscreens available, many are not suitable or too rich to be worn either on the face or under make-up. The natural moisturisers with SPF included here all are designed for use on the face and use more natural screening agents to protect the skin from sun damage:

Natural Moisturisers with SPF

Antipodes Immortal SPF 15 has been re-formulated in recent years and, as with all Antipodes skin care products contains an elegant range of base ingredients to create a delicately nourishing cream. Light on application this formula I have used for travelling and trips overseas with no issues with breakouts and this formula also contains no added fragrances, therefore making is perfect for those with chemical sensitivities. Although this product is suggested for the face and body, the price of this product for most individuals would indicate that this is more suited for application to the face.

Eco Logical Skin Care Natural Sunscreen Face SPF 30+ is not technically a natural moisturiser with SPF, however as this product is specifically designed for use on the face, we have decided to include this in our comparison. This surprisingly light and non-greasy formula applies easily and does not leave a too much of an oily residue on the skin. Designed purely as a sunscreen, the inclusion of organic moisturising base ingredients means that this face sunscreen is suitable for use under makeup and sufficiently moisturising to be applied without additional moisturiser. Eco face sunscreen with an SPF 30+ wins our versatility and value for money tick.

Every Man Jack Face Lotion SPF 15 (no longer available in Australia) is one of our best selling summer natural skin care products part of our favourite men’s natural skin care range from the US. The lightest applying natural moisturiser with SPF of the five we are comparing, this face lotion is great for applying under even a rich liquid foundation. Designed specifically for men, this dermatologist approved face lotion is said to be suitable for sensitive skin and with my personal experience with reactive skin I have not had an issue with this product. The difference between this product and the others in our comparison is the screening agent used is chemical, rather than physical (thus making the application lighter) and those people wishing to avoid chemical screening agents may prefer some of the other natural moisturisers over this product. However, this product definitely wins points for lightness of application and versatility of use.

The Jojoba Company Moisturising Protective Day Cream SPF15 is the most nourishing of the moisturisers, more of a cream than a lotion; this is a truly enriched formula with jojoba and coconut oil. The only of the five moisturisers that makes use of both physical and chemical screening agents – this natural moisturiser is suitable for those who need a good nourishing moisturiser with added sun protective factor to wear under makeup. This particular formula gets our most nourishing and moisturising award.

Kosmea Moisturising Lotion SPF 30 has been around and reformulated a few times over the years. Recently reformulated to include the classic Kosmea rose scent so familiar with many of the Kosmea products and also containing a light tint that is evident on first application. This is by far the best thought-out of the natural moisturisers with SPF and given the age of the product range in Australia it is understandable that they have had a little more time to think about the best formulation. One thing that we do find cheeky is their lack of full product listing on their packaging, (click here to see the full ingredients list) and although this ingredient list contains all of the stuff that you would expect to see in a face moisturiser with SPF, we kinda think they should make the effort to include this information the tube. However, the Kosmea moisturising lotion SPF 30 ticks many boxes for its application, the thoughtful inclusion of tinting, and the high level of sun protective factor for a face moisturiser.

Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Color + Correct Sheer Nude with SPF30 is a recent addition to our shelves. This tinted moisturiser with SPF contains zinc oxide as a screening agent and is suitable for everyday use. Packed full of certified organic and fair trade certified ingredients, this natural moisturiser with SPF is not only a well priced product, but also can be used on it's own instead of foundation for it's light tint coverage. As an excellent multi-functional natural skin care product, Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Color + Correct with SPF has fast become one of our most popular products, especially those with sensitive skin. It has been a couple of years since we wrote this product comparison, and although there have been some minor changes with availability of products, these are still great products. The Every Man Jack is no longer available, however Andalou Naturals 1000 Roses Color Correct is now available in Australia and could be added to this list.
