My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste Review

The following article includes our thoughts and opinion on one of the latest natural toothpastes on the market: My Magic Mud Toothpaste.
How can mud be magic?
Oral hygiene in the western world seems to have turned a corner these last few years with some really unique products that fly in the face of conventional toothpastes and mouthwashes. After trying My Magic Mud Tooth Powder, I was interested in trying something that was a little more conventional and a bit less messy - a toothpaste.
My Magic Mud Toothpaste - First Impressions
When we first received our My Magic Mud Toothpaste, it came with a little card that explained the change of ingredients, this has since been rectified on the packaging to ensure that you know exactly what is in your tube of toothpaste. When I open the tube, the first thing that strikes me about the My Magic Mud Toothpaste is the colour of the paste, the combination of clay, earth and charcoal, obviously influence the colour of this product, yes, it is a greenish black colour.
Free from your usual chemical foaming agents, this natural toothpaste is not foaming. Many conventional toothpastes that you buy from the supermarket contain potentially toxic ingredients and foaming agents that give us the impression that they are cleaning our teeth better.
About the ingredients in My Magic Mud Toothpaste
Without fluoride or other toxic ingredients, My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste relies solely on natural ingredients to clean your teeth and support your gums. The main ingredients in this natural toothpaste include diatomaceous earth, bentonite clay, charcoal, coconut oil and certified organic essential oils. Many of these ingredients you may be unfamiliar with, especially when it comes to toothpaste, I will start with the most familiar ones, being the essential oils.
Certified organic essential oils are concentrated plant based extracts of the aromatic compounds in flowers, barks or leaves of plants. Many natural toothpastes will contain peppermint essential oil to help promote fresh breath and a clean feeling, My Magic Mud Toothpaste includes some other essential oils that also provide a little more therapeutic benefit. Cinnamon and clove essential oils are antibacterial, they help to support the gums and also their astringent action supports natural elimination and help to tone the gums. Grapefruit seed extract is also included in this natural toothpaste to support the natural flora or bacteria in the mouth. These types of plant based extracts have a history of use in oral hygiene products for improving the health of the gums and the digestive system, which of course starts in the mouth.
Diatomaceous earth may sound like a strange ingredient to include in a toothpaste, however there is more and more information becoming available that promotes the use of this natural ingredient for normalising the microbiota or normal bacterial balance in the body. Diatomaceous earth also serves as a natural gentle abrasive and is also mineral rich, comprising a valuable component in this natural toothpaste.
Bentonite clay has natural drawing properties, often used in isolation to aid with detoxification, drawing toxins and gently healing wounds, bentonite clay gently works to cleanse the mouth of toxins. Activated coconut shell charcoal is another drawing ingredient that is also mineral rich and cleansing. The naturally high surface area of charcoal and the adsorbent qualities make it an ideal ingredient in My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste to soak up impurities in your mouth while brushing. Charcoal is also mineral rich, mostly calcium and magnesium, and in this toothpaste, helps with re-mineralisation of your teeth.
The combination of these natural ingredients, the antimicrobial, drawing, detoxifying, cleansing and re-mineralising properties all combine to create a toothpaste that is not only therapeutic, but also surprisingly pleasant to use.
What is it like to use?
Once you understand a little about the therapeutic natural ingredients in this toothpaste, it is a bit easier to get your head around the colour - it is a greenish black colour. I tried the cinnamon clove My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste, mainly because I am fond of these flavours, especially with toothpaste. The certified organic essential oils in this toothpaste really pack a punch, they are strong and invigorating, but pleasantly not overpowering.
If you are like me, you probably have a mostly white basin and shower, and with regular white coloured toothpastes it is a little more difficult to notice where you have accidentally sprayed your toothpaste while brushing. With My Magic Mud Toothpaste and my mostly white bathroom, it is easy to see where I have made mess, in fact it has made me realise how much of a mess I actually do make while brushing my teeth. The bottom line is - it is messy, you need to clean up afterwards.
With a combination of powdered extracts from diatomaceous earth, charcoal and bentonite clay I was anticipating a grainy abrasive toothpaste, however these ingredients seem to be combined in this formula in a way that make them gently cleansing, but not at all irritating.
Does it whiten your teeth?
For someone who doesn't have naturally white teeth, but also has never tried any commercial teeth whitening products, I was interested to know the answer to this question myself. When I was initially researching My Magic Mud Toothpaste I came across some claims that it whitens teeth after 14 brushes - I wanted to test this out for myself.
I am the first to admit that I did not do the most scientific experiment with this toothpaste and I have not taken any 'before and after' photos, but I can give you my honest opinion. I have noticed a slight change in the colour of my teeth after two weeks of brushing with My Magic Mud Toothpaste twice daily. While I do not have movie star porcelain white teeth after brushing, I do think there is a difference with the colour of my teeth, but it only seemed evident after the first week of brushing regularly with this toothpaste. I would suggest that My Magic Mud Toothpaste is a more natural way to whiten your teeth, without chemical bleaches, in a way that is more sustainable and visually appealing.
Would I buy this product again?
I am only part way through my tube of My Magic Mud Whitening Toothpaste and can say that once I grasped the regular cleanup requirement when using this toothpaste, I really have been enjoying this product. I find my teeth feel clean and fresh after using, I enjoy the fact that all of the ingredients are totally natural and I do enjoy the flavour. So, I would say that My Magic Mud Toothpaste is up on my list of favourite oral hygiene products including Tooth Tonic, Dr Tung's Smart Floss and our own Herbal Mouthwash and will be more than happy to keep this product in my bathroom cabinet.
